While we take a break over here to take stock of things, here's an interesting gig to look out for. Line-up includes:
* Dennis Tan aka iRa (Germany/Singapore): Based in Bremen's sonic arts scene for the last eight years, Dennis will be experimenting with a "quadrophonie playback system" at his homecoming (listen to iRa on FMN007);
* Goh Lee Kwang (Malaysia): Last seen at the 2008 Choppa Festival, the notoriously prolific "no-input" artist returns to Singapore off the back of his recent Hands release, an album described by The Wire's Dan Warburton as Lee Kwang's "most exciting and varied release since 2002's Nerve Centre".
* Amino Acid Orchestra: Zai Kuning (FMN002), Shark Fung (Engineered Beautiful Blood, I \ D) and Fuzz Lee (IF, Phorous, Life Without Dreams) play their first show together. View their promo video.

Free Music Now! Vol. 7
Original broadcast: December 17, 2009 (THU), 2230-0000h (GMT +8)
Presented by Mark Wong
Broadcast "live" from a cluttered bedroom on Balestier Road, Singapore, FMN! is an internet radio programme hosted on unpopular.radio. We pay special focus to music developments in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
"Free music" refers as much to the ideas of information flow and cultural dissemination as it does to musical forms which refuse to be shackled to genre orthodoxy. Inevitably, "Free Music NOW!" becomes clarion call for open ears and unfettered minds.
Vol. 7 is all about the bits (beats optional). This will also be our last show of the year. We'll be back in Jan to do a round-up of 2009. Thanks everyone for your support and Happy New Ears!

In Vol. 3, we remember composer and installation artist Maryanne Amacher, who suffered a stroke and passed away on October 22 at the age of 71. Deeply committed to her site-specific performances and installations, she was rarely represented on record, leading to a lifetime spent in (even greater) obscurity compared to her new music peers. Also: Indian classical experiments with Singapore's Lunar Node, new vocal adventures with Taiwan's Alice Hui-Sheng Chang, experimental eschatology by EAT TAE of the Philippines, Kurt Cobain's noise for the masses, and more.

Free Music Now! Vol. 2: Viva la Voz!

Vol. 2 puts the larynx, or voicebox, under the microscope. We've scanned the island (and its vicinity) for distinctive vocalists - persons who've devoted themselves in some degree to stretching their vocal cords to extend the expressive limits of their voices. While not all may be the most technical of "singers", our selection focuses on artists who've managed to stamp a corporeality on to their music, turning words into palpable flesh, and communicating nothing less than the physicality of presence.

Vol. 1 features the music of The Observatory, a much lauded band from Singapore which has forged new musical pathways with every one of their releases - not to mention band members' solo works and side projects. Besides showcasing the diverse musical footholds they tread, references will also be made to their diverse influences from prog-rock, pastoral folk, electro-acoustic improvisation, experimental electronica and jazz. FMN! pays tribute to a band that has been absolutely instrumental in widening sonic palettes in Singapore.
